Coastal tour

The area around Bilbao offers spectacular coastal scenery, beautiful beaches and picturesque villages. Therefore, we have developed a short tour which takes in some of these highlights on request. Relax while we do the driving, leaving you to walk, climb or just soak up the sites (based on a minimum of 4 people).

Bakio

The starting point of the tour is the picturesque bay of Plentzia. From there we drive to the beach of Bakio. It was the alternative location in the surfing world championships held at nearby Mundaka. In high summer this is a favourite seaside resort for locals. From September it becomes a popular beach for local surfing enthusiasts.

San Juan

The chapel of San Juan is part of local folklore. Built by sailors, it is on a rocky outcrop, 100 metres above sea level, accessible only by climbing over 200 narrow steps. The view of the coastline it offers is stunning.

Pedernales

For those that feel like it, we can fit in a swimming break at one of the beaches along the way, so you can really slip into the holiday mode.

Mundaka

After stopping off in the traditional whaling town of Bermeo, we get to the final destination of Mundaka. This small town boasts the longest wave in Europe, and was host to the World Surfing Championships in October each year. The village is situated on the estuary of Urdaibai, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The picturesque port with its friendly pubs overlooks the tiny rocky island of Izaro which was used by Sir Francis Drake as a base to attack passing vessels and to hide stolen treasure.
From here, our way back to your accommodation.

World Championships

Mundaka has been the site of the World Surfing Championships, Billabong Pro. The geographical characteristics of the river delta at Urdaibai provides a continuous deposition of sand masses and accounts for the formation of a huge sand bank at the breaking point of the waves in the autumn and winter. The so-called "longest left hand wave in Europe" or "longest left" can stretch up to 300 metres long across the bay. It is recognised in the surfing world as being very demanding and fast. The sand is as hard as concrete and the current is strong. Not for beginners!
